Love a Heart: Buy a date, save lives.

For the last two years, I spent Valentine’s Day in search of love or at the very least I was having fun in my singledom. One of the most fun things I’ve done in said singledom is stand up on stage and allow myself to be sold at the extremely conscious-healthy human auction Love a Heart. This year I am no longer in search of love but you bet I will be spending Valentine’s Eve morally supporting these brave souls.

Here’s my favourite photo of myself from last year’s auction.

Love a Heart, entering into it’s fourth year, has raised over $30,000k for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. So what makes this auction better than any other auction you’ve seen before? I’m not sure I could pinpoint one specific thing so I’ll talk about all of them. First, let’s get the ‘how it works’ straight: you bid on a person; if you win the bid for a date with said person, you pay the organizers then you meet and you talk and exchange contact information. All proceeds go to the Heart & Stroke foundation so they keep us all healthy and happy! Woo hoo!

In no particular order:

loveaheart 2014 ladies
Brandie Martin, Keli Carneiro, Jamie-Leigh Cuthertson, Alison Michelle, Rochelle Latinsky, Katie Boland, Chrissy Newton, Lauren O’Neill, Amanda Connon Unda, Rayanne Langdon

1. The bachelor/ettes are stellar. I mean just look at them!

Ian Barnett, Jon Simonassi, McGee Maddox, Jason Agnew, Yaw Attuah, Jason Carlin, Jon Crowley, Jeff Maynard, Jay Davis, Phil Faubert

Each one comes with their own date package so you don’t have to do any of the work trying to come up with what to do; because really, who likes doing that anyway? If you want to know more about any of these lovely folk, just click on either of the collages – it’ll take you to the Facebook event page that tells all.

2. The auctionees/hosts have always been fantastically entertaining. In previous years, the event was hosted by the equally hilarious, witty and charming Shawn Hawaii & Shannon Kelly. This year for a different flavour of fabulous, the sexy1 duo known as Nat & Marie will be taking the stage; pressuring you to bid more money. I can’t wait to watch them in action!

3. The date packages are sure to be outstanding. Last year there was pole dancing and sushi2, and so many more. I’ll be honest that I can’t remember any of the other dates for many reasons that are uninteresting to reveal at this point in time. According to the event page, some of the dates so far this year will include: Tickets to Mirvish Productions‘ Arrabal, a $150 Gift Certificate to Scandinave Spa Blue Mountain, 2x 5th row Raptor Tickets from Hôtel Le Germain Maple Leaf Square, a $50 Gift Certificate to Mildred’s Temple Kitchen, a $100 Gift Certificate to Flight Centre Canada and tickets to the Beer Makes History Better tour from Urban Adventures. Mind you, there won’t be a gazillion activities per date but you’re sure to get at least one or two per date. And that’s more than enough when you consider your money is going to a charity whose sole purpose is keeping us all alive.

4. The sponsors on board have some awesome offers, some of whom were already mentioned in point number 3:

Off-site sponsors3:
Rent Frock Repeat offering: 10% of your Rental Price will be donated to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
Lou Dawg's offering: 10% off your meal (must provide proof of purchase of your ticket to the event).
In venue sponsors4:
Barefoot Wine & Bubbly Sugarwink Cupcakes Snapshot Magnets
Motives Cosmetics

Love a Heart 2012: The Bachelorettes

It’s February1. You know what that means, right? It’s Heart Month. I’m not going to lie. I was looking forward to it this year. I had a great time last year2 and I know this year will be even better.

Last year, a date with me meant dinner at Fresh & a sexy Yoga class at the Ritz Carlton. Are you wondering what date package will be in my envelope this year? I’d love to tell you before the event, but I’d have to kill you3.

If you haven’t heard about Love a Heart, it’s a fun evening filled with lots of handsome men & women who have donated their time for a great cause. Shannon Hunter started the charity auction in 2011 and has raised $21,000 already; she hopes to bring the amount to $30,000 after the event on Thursday4. You can check out full details on Facebook or you can buy tickets here.

Love a Heart 2013

If you’ve been to Love a Heart in previous years, there have been quite a few changes. Changes you’ll have to attend to discover, of course. I can’t give you all the answers!

No one answered me last year, so I want to ask again: What’s your favourite date activity?

Footnotes:
  1. just in case you failed to notice[]
  2. despite being full of anxious thoughts about not being worthy of being up on stage with such stellar women[]
  3. jokes on you, I don’t actually know[]

Love a [fragile]Heart

February is Heart month and my dear friend1, Shannon Hunter, has put together a super FUNdraiser called Love a Heart which is in it’s 2nd year; All proceeds go to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

She had actually asked me last year but I turned it down because I was in enough “complicated” situations that I couldn’t even fathom going up on stage in such a high-pressure situation. This year however, I was pretty excited when she asked me again. I got even more excited when I heard my wifey, Christine, was also being auctioned off… and then I heard about the other wonderful women who will be auctioned off2.

I don’t think I belong up on stage with these ladies, but I’m so happy to have been asked that I’m just going to go up on stage and have fun. I think so long as no one throws any food or drinks at me it’ll be fun. If you aren’t doing anything on Febraury 9th and you want to watch me feel really nervous on stage while people3 yell out seemingly random though somewhat sequential numbers at me then you should come to the Hideout at or shortly after 8pm. Full event details can be found on facebook.

Moving on to less-neurotic thoughts, I’m excited to learn more about the date packages that each bachelorette & bachelor will be paired up with. I like fun dates. Dinner is great for the first date but you learn so much about a person from watching them conduct activities… like rock-climbing for example. What a fun date that is. I’m also super excited about the private fitting that Rent Frock Repeat has organized for us Bachelorettes tonight.

RFR also be generous enough to give anyone who uses the code LOVEAHEART a 10% discount. I hope I find something within my limited budget but if not, it’ll be a fun to try on dresses with the other hot bachelorettes who will be attending4.

While I wasn’t a Bachelorette last year I did attend to give moral support to my friends who had been auctioned off and it was quite a fun night and I’m sure this year will be no different. If you’re a fan of Tiny Danza‘s music5, they’ll be playing a set between the Bachelor & the Bachelorette auctions!

It’ll be a super fun night and I hope you can come out and show6 some moral support7!

You know me and questions, I like to ask them: What is your favourite activity to do on a date?
