What ‘A Beautiful Mess’ this is…

I used to post song lyrics quite often. This was during the days when I had few1 readers and also when I used to write poetry. I stopped because I didn’t think that posting lyrics constituted a ‘helpful’ or ‘informative’  post but I’ve missed doing it. So I decided that I would get back to doing it but with some added value2, some commentary from me!

Sometimes I just hear a song and I can’t stop listening to it. I could listen to it all day, everyday for weeks. The first song I’d like to talk about is one that was introduced to me by Haza. She’s a great friend – inspirational and just plain wonderful. Just like this song, A Beautiful Mess by Jason Mraz.

Before we get to the lyrics, I need to talk about the music that this song is set to: its soft yet strong piano and string instruments’ chords gives the song a very romantic, almost serenading, quality for me. This sound is a large part of the reason I love this song3.

You’ve got the best of both worlds
You’re the kind of girl who can take down a man,
And lift him back up again
You are strong but you’re needy,
Humble but you’re greedy
And based on your body language,
And shoddy cursive I’ve been reading
Your style is quite selective,
Though your mind is rather reckless
Well I guess it just suggests
That this is just what happiness is

And what a beautiful mess this is
It’s like picking up trash in dresses

Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you write
Kind of turn themselves into knives
And don’t mind my nerve you could call it fiction
But I like being submerged in your contradictions dear
‘Cause here we are, here we are

Not to state the obvious4 but I feel like he’s talking about me in the beginning of this song. I am strong but needy, I’ve been told I’m humble and I’m definitely greedy5. In some ways I have taken a man down6, and I think my cursive writing could be prettier. So when the song started he had me hooked from the beginning!

And while I’ve never picked up trash in dresses, I have washed dishes in my fancies so I guess I know what he’s talking about. Now, I’ve certainly had my words kind of turned into blades… and it can be such a heart breaking experience.

Although you were biased I love your advice
Your comebacks they’re quick
And probably have to do with your insecurities
There’s no shame in being crazy,
Depending on how you take these
Words I’m paraphrasing this relationship we’re staging

And what a beautiful mess this is
It’s like picking up trash in dresses

Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you say
Kind of turn themselves into blades
And kind and courteous is a life I’ve heard
But it’s nice to say that we played in the dirt oh dear
Cause here we are, Here we are
Here we are [x7]
We’re still here
What a beautiful mess this is
It’s like taking a guess when the only answer is yes

I think the last line above is brilliant: ‘taking a guess when the only answer is yes’, I don’t know about you but I’ve done that a few times in my lifetime. My comebacks aren’t always quick, but I have my moments and the way he describes it in this song are quite accurate in describing how I feel when I do have quick comebacks. I love too that he assures me there’s no shame in being crazy; I often think I’m crazy… and when I see movies set in the olden days I know I would’ve been sent to an institution a long time ago.

Through timeless words, and priceless pictures
We’ll fly like birds, out of this earth
And times they turn, and hearts disfigure
But that’s no concern when we’re wounded together
And we tore our dresses, and stained our shirts
But it’s nice today, oh the wait was so worth it.

This song perfectly puts into metaphor an important part of my relationship with him,7 it was the series of events that led us to where we are now – a8 place that I wouldn’t give up for the world. Our relationship might not be a mess now, but it was once and looking back, despite the mess there was something really beautiful about what we had. The love is real, and it always was, we just had to wade through the mess of insecurities that stood in our way. The wait was definitely worth it.

There’s a real poetry in the lyrics of this song and it9 speaks to me deep in my heart, combined with the wonderful music, I won’t be getting sick of this song anytime soon.

Have you heard this song? What do you think?

  3. Ah Reggie — that’s the beauty of a great song! We can all think the songwriter had us (or our so) in mind when he/she wrote it!

Yes, I’ve heard the song and like it, too. It speaks to me on many different levels as apparently it does to you. I also love the music behind the words. It’s rather deceptive music for the message the words provide, though — don’t you think? All that soft seduction when the words of the song are almost a lament for the lady’s personality traits 😛
