Christmas is a time for giving

Recently, my friend, April1 wrote a post questioning whether she had lost her Christmas spirit. I answered that the Christmas spirit2 isn’t about the gifts and the decor but its about the time you spend with each other and the goodwill you share with everybody3.

I know that sounds hypocritical of me to say, considering I’m all about my decorations and gifts, but I only do what I do because I’m able to. If I wasn’t able to do all these things, I would still have a Happy Christmas as long as I can warm myself up in the love of the wonderful people that are around me all year-round.

We hear it all the time, but we never actually test out the theory, that time is the best gift we can give anybody. If instead of decorating your home, and cooking special meals and going shopping for Christmas presents, we all just went to visit each other and spent quality time with each other instead just think how much happier we would all be.

So this Christmas, think about someone you haven’t gone to see in a while and give them a call. Even if you just spend 20 minutes of your day on the phone catching up it could be the best gift you could give them this year.

Will you make time for people this year?

  1. I think that is such a good post. That is SO true. Christmas is all about giving. In fact, in my “about” section, I have this quote about why I blog.

“You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.”

A quote by Kahlil Gibran (Lebanese born American philosophical Essayist, Novelist and Poet. 1883-1931)

  2. I agree with what you shared completely. Nowadays, Christmas is wrapped with so much commercialism that gradually we lose the notion of a true Christmas spirit. So, reading post like this one really puts a smile on my face.

  3. Couldn’t agree more. We’ve decided not to exchange presents in my family this year, yet I’m feeling the Christmas spirit more than ever, maybe I’m even ironically going to enjoy it all a whole lot more thatnks to the fact I’m not stressing over gifts. And my favorite part of Christmas is hearing from friends or people I haven’t seen in a while and sending the love back, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside… The best things one can give or get come about unexpected 🙂

  4. When I look back on Christmas, all my best memories are about doing things with people. It might be baking goodies, the long drawn-out present opening my family does, or even decorating. The thing that makes them special is the people I do them with. So I think you’re right on the money with this post in that it all boils down to spending time with our loved ones.

  5. @Lyndi: You’re so right 🙂 I have to remember this for the rest of the year as I usually prefer to hole myself up in my room and spend time with my online friends LOL

@Penny: I’m glad you’ll get to spend time with so much family. My parents are the only family I have here, everyone else is in another country. In way it is good because they would all expect presents AND for me to spend time with them, but of course its not good too because I never get to see them. Have a great time at your party tomorrow.

@Debbie: Thanks so much. As I said to Lyndi, I so need to remember this advice for the rest of the year too!

  6. I tell my clients continually that time is a precious gift that we can give away or keep for ourselves. All too often we allow our time to be taken up with excess and unnecessary, but when we choose to spend time on ourselves and our loved ones, the rewards are tremendous.

    Great Post!

  7. Aw that’s really sweet and very true. I feel sad I won’t be spending Christmas with my family, but I will be spending a lot of time with them in the new year. As for some other family who live here I think they would appreciate my time more than any gift. I will be seeing my granny and some other family around Christmas, and of course getting to see some friends tomorrow which is the best as I haven’t seen them in ages 🙂 My Christmas isn’t very gifty at all this year, I will only have gifts from my bf but we are going to enjoy ourselves!
